- Although the area was settled by several farmers, German immigrant brothers, John and Joseph Hoeschen built the first businesses in Freeport.
- The Freeport post office was opened in 1879 and John Hoeschen was its first postmaster.
- The name, Minneapolis, is derived from the Dakota Sioux word “minna” for water and the Greek word “polis” for city.
- The government built a flour mill in Minneapolis in 1823. Flour milling became the original major industry and made Minneapolis the milling capital of the world.
